Fort Artillery

Come and see our musketry and cannon firing skills

It may not be 1872, with Queen Victoria on the throne of England, however, throughout the year, when the Nothe Fort Artillery are on parade, it is quite easy to imagine you have travelled back almost one and a half centuries in time.

The Fort Artillery in their splendid artillery uniforms amaze the Fort’s visitors with their musketry and cannon firing skills on alternate Sundays throughout the year and on occasions when the Fort holds special events. They also attend events promoted by other organisations and are always a major attraction.

We would love to hear from you if you are interested in becoming a volunteer or would like to us to perform at your special event. The group have a busy social life as well as having lot of fun along the way. Members are a mixed bunch coming from all walks of life, however, what we have in common is enthusiasm and an interest in military history. We are very much involved in the local community, firing regularly for large cruise ships leaving Portland Port.

Please note we fire the cannons on the 2nd and 4th Sunday in the month during the Fort's opening times, usually around 12 noon. In addition to this we perform at many Fort events throughout the year. Always check to make sure, if you are coming specially to see us perform.

Private Hire

The Artillery Volunteers can be hired to attend special events both private and public and will design their programme based on your requirements.

All activities are covered by public liability insurance and full risk assessments are conducted for each event. Please contact us to discuss hiring the Fort Artillery for your private or public event.

Become a Fort Artillery Volunteer

There are no age limits to becoming a Nothe Fort Artillery Volunteer, however the use of guns and the firing of the cannon is restricted to older members who have received full training in the safe use of the weapons.

Uniforms and muskets are provided after an initial training period and safety assessment – like the Victorians there is strict attention to detail and strict standards of behaviour – but great fun.
